Sunday 22nd of March 2009 - Driver training & Funkhana

The MX-5 Club of WA has booked one of the Skidpans at the AHG Driving for the whole day.

The morning session will concentrate on practical driving skills to teach awareness of how your car will react approaching the limits of traction, then after a break we will get back out on the skidpan to practice on various motorkhana and autokhana courses.

Each session will be limited to 20 cars to minimise waiting, so get in quick!

The cost will be $30 per car, per session. You can sign up for either or both sessions, we hope that driver training participants will stay for the Funkhana to build on the skills acquired in the morning session.

The tasks for you to practice in the morning session will include:

  • Threshold and Cadence Braking
Get the most out of your braking system, by minimising brake lockup.

  • ABS braking
ABS takes some of the hard work out of stopping in a hurry, but how many people know what occurs when ABS activates? If your car is fitted with ABS then the best plan of attack is usually to push the brake pedal as hard as you can and let the ABS do the work, this session will allow you to give the ABS a work out in a safe environment.

  • Swerve and Correct
    Obstacle avoidance while braking.

  • Slalom
Drive around the cones as fast as you dare! What could possibly go wrong? This will test your ability to drive smoothly and accurately.

Afternoon Session
  • Funkhana

We will set out a selection of Motorkhana and Autokhana courses to test your new skills. These will be similar to the courses that you will encounter in the state motorkhana championship or at an MC Motorsport Autotest round but without the extra pressure of the stop watch.

What You Need
  • A Car! Check the oil, coolant, tyre pressures and general condition before arriving.

  • Long clothing and covered shoes (clothing must be cotton or similar, avoid synthetics. Thin soled shoes which are not too wide make the best driving shoes).

  • Helmet for the Funkhana only. Must be in good condition and have an AS1698 (Australian Standard for Helmets) or equivalent as per the CAMS manual. All motorcycle helmets should meet this standard, so a motorbike helmet is OK.

Places will be allocated on a first in basis, so reply to this email ASAP, telling me which sessions you would like to attend. Payment will be required by Thursday 12th March.
Helpers will be required, please let me know if you are willing and able to help out.
