Sunday 1st of April 2012 - Monthly Cruise Ape Thrill Charity Poker Run

The MX-5 Club cruise on the 1st Sunday of each month.

We meet at Burswood (click here to view a map) at 9AM for a 9:30 AM start.

The tradition of making sport of the un-expecting on the 1st of Ape thrill this months cruise will be some serious monkey .. err ... great ape business.

To help raise money for http://www.orangutan.org.au the club will run a Charity Poker Run/Observation Rally/Treasure hunt.

Former club member and T.O.P. President Leif Cocks will be at the event to share information on how The Orangutan Project helps save these great apes.

The orangutans' rainforest is being felled for Palm Oil and other crops at an overwhelming rate with the remaining forest being degraded by drought and forest fires. Extinction in the wild is likely in the next 10 years for Sumatran Orangutans and soon after for Bornean Orangutans. We need to recognise the massive amount of suffering being inflicted on a species that is 97% genetically identical to humans.

Orangutans are highly intelligent animals. Their intelligence is comparable to that of a five or six year old child. Surely these self-aware animals deserve the right to live and to be free from torture and exploitation?

It's an observation rally with five compulsory checkpoints along the way were you are dealt a playing card at each one. The object is to have the best poker hand at the end of the run. Correct observation answers or finding treasure items may result in extra playing cards thus increasing your chance of winning.

The Poker Run is a charity fundraiser so we'd love to see as many club members attend and donate as possible. At the start each entrant buys buy a $20 scorecard to record the cards drawn at the checkpoints. You can have more then one scorecard per vehicle, for instance both driver and navigator could enter and buy a scorecard each.

There will be an opportunity to increase your chances to win with spot prizes and you can buy extra cards. However a hand always consists of five cards; the best five-card combination of your cards must be played. The winning hand is determined by standard poker hand rankings, any identical winning hands will be resolved with a simple cutting of a fresh deck.
We encourage you to bring some extra cash to improve your odds as there will be some great prizes for the winning hand and runner up as well as a raffle prize.

The final destination is a picnic / BBQ in a park.
