Join us on a 100km midweek lunchtime cruise led by Michael Clowes to sample a quintessential Aussie culinary delight the “Dogs Eye” with “Dead Horse” aka Pie with Sauce.

There’s nothing like stumbling into a warm and welcoming little country bakery, only to taste their assorted home made pies or stacked chicken and salad rolls and realise you’ve hit the jackpot. It’s rare to meet someone who doesn’t claim to know of ‘the best’ place to stop for a meat pie or a sausage roll on a road trip. Whilst almost every bakery which sell meat pies wants you to know that they have been somehow at some time been rated best meat pie, after all there is an annual “Official Great Aussie Pie Competition”, some WA bakeries pop up again and again in the many of the “Best Pies in WA” lists. We managed to string 3 together for this cruise.

We gather at the Highland Bakery & Patisserie located in the Centrepoint Shopping Centre in Midland around 9 for a 9:45am departure [Google Maps] . The Highland Bakery and Patisserie has been awarded Australia’s best plain sausage roll; these things are downright delicious!

We regroup at Honey’s Bakehouse in Roleystone, if you rate your bakeries more on their sweet offering than anything else, this place will be your heaven. They’re offering one of the best apple turnovers going around, delicious bee stings and the all-important old-school jam or custard doughnuts. The real stand out here though is their crazy vegan creations like the deep-fried potato and gravy and their vegan vanilla slice. This place is where diets go to die.

We finish at the Four Seasons Patisserie in Kelmscott which is the kind of place that covers their walls with gold medals and certificates of excellence for you to admire while pondering your order. It’s the home of some of Australia’s most highly regarded pies. Baker and owner Andy Le’s apple pie took out the first spot in the Great Aussie Pie Competition and the plain mince pie took home a gold medal, so look no further.
