Sunday 3rd of October 2021 - Monthly Cruise - Wongan Hills Wildflower Run

A Sunday Drive for people who like to spend some time on roads further afield as we head into the Northern Wheatbelt along secondary roads in search of Wildflowers. There will be enough time to stop for pictures along the way when you see some nice specimens; don’t worry about falling behind; there are 5 regroup points on this 387 km cruise were you can catch up.

Before lunch we spent time around Wongan Hills. It’s name comes from the Aboriginal words ‘Wongan Katta’, which translates to ‘Talking Hills’, referring to the wind whispering through the hills which rise just North-West of the town site. These hills are the largest single area of natural vegetation remaining in the northern wheatbelt. The area is extremely diverse with more than 1400 species of flowering plants with 24 species unique to the Wongan Hills. In spring, a spectacular display of many and various wildflowers can be seen on the drive through the hills.

We stop for lunch at the Miling Hotel; an imposing federation stye building originally built in 1934 and recently reopened after a restoration. It offers quality country pub style meals with icy cold beers, a quality selection of wines, ciders and soft drinks.

After lunch we head back towards Perth through the Moore River national Park and the Yeal Nature Reserve with a regroup at the Windmill Roadhouse at Regans Ford before finishing at the Ocean View Tavern to reflect on the day’s drive and share some stories and photos before you make your own way home.

All in all you are looking at a total distance of some 520 km; a bit less if you hail from the northern or eastern suburbs and a bit more if you are a southerner.

We meet at the The Cola Café and Museum located at 128 Stirling Terrace, Toodyay from 8:30 am onwards if you want to have brekkie at the Café, or in time for the 9:30 am briefing if you are having yours beforehand.

Please RSVP to Aart by email to president@mx5club.com.au, advising if you are driving solo or with a navigator, on or before Wednesday 29 September. That way we can email you the cruise notes, finalise the lunch booking at the Miling Hotel and know who should be at the meeting point before we depart.

Please make sure you start with a full tank of fuel.
