Friday 18th of September 2020 - Road Trip 2020

Michael Clowes is taking us on a road trip to Donnelly River Holiday Village; originally a timber town it is now a unique holiday village 290 kilometres south of Perth in the Southern Forests close to Manjimup, Bridgetown and Nannup.

The secluded and picturesque village, preserved in its entirety, is nestled in tall timbered karri forest and provides a fascinating picture into the simpler and uncomplicated life in the fifties. Native fauna include kangaroos, possums, emus and plentiful bird life roam free through the village. The village operated as a mill town for thirty years; the 35 workers cottages, workers club, school and general store were originally built for the timber mill workers and their families in the early 1950s. It has operated as a holiday village since the 1980s and is now listed on the State Heritage Council register. Whilst cottages have been upgraded to incorporate a hot water service, electric stoves and microwaves, the dwellings remain largely unchanged with the wood stove in the kitchen, log fire in the lounge and a verandah to relax on.

The Club has booked five 3 bedroom self contained cottages with accommodation for up to 26-30 people. The general store is open from 8:30 to 5 pm 7 days a week for coffee, bread, milk, takeaway food, etc.

You will need to bring sheets, doonas, blankets, pillow slips and towels. Alternatively, a linen hire service for these is available with prior booking, typically $30 per bed for the weekend). Also bring drinks for Friday and Saturday night, food for Friday night, nibbles to share and breakfast provisions.

For those taking the day off on Friday we will have an organised scenic drive of around 330 km on some great MX-5 roads. We depart at 9:30 am from Dome on the SW Hwy in Pinjarra though the back roads of Dwellingup, Nanga Brook, Wellington Dam, lunching in the Fergusson Valley, before continuing through Donnybrook, Kirup, Balingup, Nannup then finally to Donnelly River Village allowing for sufficient comfort and coffee breaks.

For those leaving later on Friday just meet us at the Donnelly River Village.

Friday night all will be welcomed by a complimentary drink around roaring open pit fires, or if the weather is inclement, in the Donnelly River Village Workers Club.

Saturday day will be a run around the best roads of Donnelly River, Manjimup, Pemberton, and Bridgetown with an optional stop to ride the Pemberton Tramway ($ 28 pp) deep into the picturesque forests. The full run will be around 300 km with plenty of options to take short cuts if a more leisurely pace is desired.

Saturday night will be back at the Donnelly River Village Workers Club for drinks, supplied pizzas we will cook ourselves and hopefully a yarn around some roaring open pit fires.

Sunday morning we take off for a 150 km run taking in the back roads to Donnybrook for morning tea before heading off again to Gnomesville and the Fergusson valley and arriving at the Dardanup Tavern for Lunch.
